Adrian native Kellen Davis is in the mix to start at tight end for the Chicago Bears.
The Bears traded standout tight end Greg Olsen last week to the Carolina Panthers, allowing Davis to challenge for a starting spot. Davis took reps with the first team offense during the first few days of practice, according to several reports.
“I feel like it’s a good opportunity to move up the depth chart,’’ Davis told the Chicago Tribune. “I’ve got to try to take the next step.”
Veteran tight end Desmond Clark has agreed to terms with the Bears. His role has not been determined.
The Bears also signed former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth. Davis (6-foot-7, 262 pounds) and Spaeth (6-7, 270) are both classic, bruising tight ends.
‘’We’re not looking for Kellen Winslow; we’re looking for Mike Ditka,’’ Bears general manager Jerry Angelo told reporters Sunday. ‘’And so, the tight ends we have now really fit more of the profile we want for our offense.’’
